ICT projects boosting gender empowerment honoured in Busan

Listen /

Seven projects promoting women's empowerment through digital technology have received awards at a conference in South Korea.

More than two thousand delegates attended a special ceremony organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UN Women to recognize those who have used the power of technology to help transform women's lives.

ITU estimates that some 200 million fewer women worldwide are online compared to men.

Without action, the Union says the Internet gender gap could grow to 350 million within three or four years.

Winners of the GEM-TECH Awards come from many different countries including Ethiopia, India, the UK and the Philippines.

The competition was open to both women and men working in the field of ICT and gender.
