The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he's gravely concerned by an attack by Islamic State (ISIL) fighters on the northern Syrian town of Kobane.

About 400 people are reported to have been killed and approximately 160,000 others have fled since fighting for the control of the town started three weeks ago.

An international coalition is continuing airstrikes against the militants.

Derrick Mbatha has more details.
