General Assembly pays tribute to late President of Zambia

Tributes have been paid at the United Nations to President Michael Sata of Zambia who passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in London.

The president, who took office in September 2011, has been praised by the UN Secretary-General for his vision and commitment to addressing the needs of Zambia's poor.

The President of the UN General Assembly, Sam Kutesa announced his death in an Assembly meeting.

"It is my sad duty to pay tribute to the late President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Michael Chilufya Sata who passed away on Tuesday 28 October 2014. On behalf of the General Assembly, I request the representative of Zambia to convey our condolences to the government and people of Zambia and to the bereaved family of His Excellency Michael Chilufya Sata." The President of the General Assembly invited delegates to stand and observe a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of the late Zambian leader.

Representatives of regional groups at the United Nations made statements in honour of President Sata.
