Easing the situation in Lebanon is essential to its continued stability, according to the UN Secretary-General.

A message from Ban Ki-moon to the International Support Group for Lebanon was delivered by the UN Special Coordinator for the country, Derrek Plumbly, in Berlin on Tuesday.

Last month, the Group expressed concern about the severe and growing challenges facing Lebanon as a result of the conflict in Syria.

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Ban Ki-moon understands anxieties in Lebanon about the scale of the Syrian refugee presence.

” He stressed the continuing importance of close cooperation between the Government and UN High Commissioner for Refugees in managing the refugee presence effectively and in accordance with international humanitarian standards and human rights.”

Ban Ki-moon also said he is concerned at the shortfall in funding and hopes the meeting of the support group will encourage more predictable funding from humanitarian sources.
