Undelivered aid commitments stall progress on UN anti-poverty goals

Listen /

Undelivered aid commitments by developed countries are holding back progress on the UN anti-poverty goals or MDGs in developing countries.

That's according to the latest report of the MDG Gap Task Force entitled the State of the Global Partnership for Development.

Goal 8 was created as a call to developed countries to extend specific support to developing countries to help them achieve the other 7 MDGs.

Although there has been a significant increase in the Official Development Assistance (ODA), the report states, aid flows either fell short or declined in some regions.

Mr Wu Hung-bo is the Under-Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Interagency Affairs for the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

"Shortfalls in development cooperation highlight the need for a revitalized global partnership for development as the international community moves forward delivering a post-2015 development agenda."

The poorest countries need more aid, trade, debt relief, medicines and technologies, the report underscores.
