Afghanistan is going through a pivotal moment, according to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ban Ki-moon urges the country's two Presidential candidates, Dr Abdullah Abdullah and Dr Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, to conclude an agreement on a government of national unity.

He notes that on 12 July, the two men agreed to commit to a comprehensive and credible audit of the results of the 14 June run-off election, and accept its outcome.

This audit was completed last Thursday, and updated results are expected to be announced shortly.

Mr Ban is stressing that a genuine partnership is needed to tackle Afghanistan’s many challenges.

He says both parties share a real responsibility to guide Afghanistan to a peaceful and more prosperous future.
