Syria funding crisis to impact refugee food rations: WFP

People displaced by the war in Syria as well as refugees in neighbouring countries will receive less food aid starting October this year.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) issued the warning on Thursday citing the lack of funds forcing the agency to make drastic cutbacks.

WFP is currently providing food for almost 6 million Syrians.

The agency is funded by contributions from governments, the private sector, other organizations and individuals.

The needs are still high in Syria, WFP warns, and that the international community had recently made progress in gaining access to people in hard-to-reach areas.

US$352 million are required for WFP operations as a whole until the end of the year.
