Samoa pushes to reduce gender violence and increase political representation of women

Efforts are underway on the Pacific Ocean island of Samoa to reduce gender violence and increase the political representation of women.

The small island state has amongst the highest rates of violence against women in the world and the lowest number of female members of parliament.

The gender-focused agency of the United Nations, UN Women, is now working on building the confidence of Samoan women about their right to live without violence and to bring about political change.

Daniel Dickinson has been speaking to Suisala Mele Maualaivao who is based in Samoa for UN Women.
