Reducing the violence in Syria and getting humanitarian aid into the country is a priority for the United Nations, according to the Special Envoy for the country.

Eleven million Syrians are in urgent need of aid, the UN says.

Staffan de Mistura was briefing the press about his recent visit to Damascus where he met with the highest authorities of the nation and civil society.

A special session of the Security Council chaired by US President Barack Obama on Wednesday is focusing on the challenges regarding foreign terrorist fighters.

Earlier, a group of Arab foreign ministers held a meeting on the margins of the UN General Assembly to discuss Syria, Palestine, Yemen and Libya and ways in which to combat ISIL.

Mr de Mistura told Reem Abaza that his focus is to put the Syrian people first.
