Peacekeeping missions of the United Nations need to respond to a dramatic shift in the "global security landscape" according to the UN Secretary-General.

The UN currently manages 17 missions on four different continents staffed by more than 130,000 personnel, the highest in the organization's history.

As the demands on peacekeepers increase, the UN is looking at how to adapt to a changing environment.
