WOMEN: Most neonatal deaths can be prevented: UNICEF

Despite dramatic progress on child survival, one million babies die the day they are born from mostly preventable causes; that's according to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).  Data from a new report released by UNICEF show that the first 28 days of a newborn's life are the most vulnerable with almost 2.8 million babies dying each year during this period.  Many of these deaths could be prevented with simple, cost-effective measures.  Stephanie Coutrix met with UNICEF' s Dr Tessa Wardlaw to highlight the new analysis on child mortality throughout the world.

UNHCR: Syrian refugee numbers top three million

The number of refugees from the civil war in Syria has passed three million amid reports of horrifying conditions inside the country.  The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR says a further 6.5 million people have been internally displaced by the ongoing conflict. The majority are women and children.  Iman and her family are some of the victims of the conflict in their country.  They were displaced four times inside Syria before finally seeking refuge in Lebanon.  Warda Aljawahiry reports.

Samoa pushes to reduce gender violence and increase political representation of women

Efforts are underway on the Pacific Ocean island of Samoa to reduce gender violence and increase the political representation of women.  The small island state has amongst the highest rates of violence against women in the world and the lowest number of female members of parliament.  The gender-focused agency of the United Nations, UN Women, is now working on building the confidence of Samoan women about their right to live without violence and to bring about political change.  Daniel Dickinson caught up with Suisala Mele Maualaivao who is based in Samoa for UN Women on a recent trip to the Pacific island.
