The President of Iran has said he is astonished that murderous terrorist groups call themselves Islamic and that the Western media repeat this false claim.

Speaking in the UN General Assembly on Thursday President Hassan Rouhani said that uprooting extremism requires the spread of justice and development.

He said the distortion of divine teachings to justify brutality and cruelty must not be allowed.

The pain, President Rouhani added, is made greater when terrorists spill blood in the name of religion and behead people in the name of Islam.

"I am astonished that these murderous groups call themselves Islamic. What is more astonishing is that the Western media, in line with them, repeats this false claim, which provokes the hatred of all Muslims."

President Rouhani pointed out that everyday Muslim people, who have learned lessons of kindness and empathy from their Prophet, recall their God as merciful and compassionate.

He said they see the defamation of their religion as part of what he called an "Islamophobic project".
