Many civilian lives have been saved in Darfur since the UN peacekeepers were deployed in the area.

That's according to the Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

Mohammed Ibn Chambas was speaking to Assumpta Massoi ahead of his briefing to the Security Council on Thursday.

Around the clock patrols in the displaced camps as well as having "fire wood patrols" where women are escorted to pick firewood, has also made the area safer for the people.

Mr Chambas also spoke about the challenges facing the Mission.
