UN envoy warns against targeting of Sunnis in Iraq's Basra provinceListen /
Iraqi authorities in the Basra governorate have been urged to reassure Sunni citizens in southern Iraq of their safety and security.
The appeal has come from the top UN envoy in Iraq, Nickolay Mladenov who has expressed his grave concern about the recent acts of violence against Sunnis in Basra.
According to the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), since 23 June this year at least 19 Sunni civilian men have been killed and a further 19 injured in a spate of targeted killings and abductions.
UNAMI says that many of the incidents were not reported in the media but it has verified each of them through multiple sources.
Mr. Mladenov called on the authorities in Basra to investigate these crimes and threats of violence and prosecute those responsible.
He also urged police and security officials in the province to do all they can to strengthen security measures to prevent further acts or threats of violence against minorities.
