The Secretary-General has urged the Israeli Prime Minister to return to calm and to take steps to facilitate the Egyptian efforts to broker a durable truce.

The remarks came in a readout of Mr Ban Ki-moon's telephone conversation with Mr Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday.

The two discussed the crisis in Gaza, including the need for the parties to return to the Cairo-led ceasefire negotiations.

The Secretary-General reiterated that the United Nations stands ready to support any agreement the parties may reach.

He stressed the importance for the parties to establish a long-term ceasefire with a view to resume meaningful negotiations on a two-state solution.

Violence erupted in the Strip again after last week's breach of Gaza's latest ceasefire.
