The Pacific Ocean nation of Samoa is preparing to welcome the international community for a meeting focussing on the challenges faced by small island developing states. The SIDS conference is being described as a once in a decade opportunity to bring the issues to a worldwide audience. Ali'ioaiga Feturi Elisaia is the Permanent Representative to the UN for Samoa. Daniel Dickinson asked him about the main themes of the meeting.
Displaced Iraqis share transit camp with Syrian refugees
A transit camp for Syrian refugees in Erbil, northern Iraq is making room for an influx of Iraqi citizens displaced by recent fighting, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The Darashakran Refugee camp is taking in Iraqis from Sinjar fleeing clashes between ISIL, the Islamic armed militants and Kurdish troops. Meanwhile, thousands of Syrian refugees have made the camp their home since 2011, when the crisis broke out in their country. The UN human rights chief has warned that the "grave and horrific violations" being carried out daily by ISIL could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Warda Al-Jawahiry has more.
#GirlWithABook creators meet Malala
The two young American girls behind a widely successful social media campaign promoting education, #GirlWithABook, are helping to build a library in Pakistan. Inspired by Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban in 2012 for wanting to go to school, Lena Shareef and Olivia Curl have partnered with the non-profit, the Citizens Foundation. The organization, established by a group of Pakistani citizens, builds schools and trains and hires teachers. The #GirlWithABook creators spoke to Leda Letra about this next project.
