The situation of Iraqis who remain trapped on Mount Sinjar in the northern part of the country is critical, according to a spokesperson for the UN Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

Thousands of people, mainly from Yezidi and other minority communities have been targeted by rebel fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

The United Nations estimates that approximately 600,000 Iraqis have been displaced in these attacks, bringing the total number of displaced people in the country to more than 1.2 million.

Thousands of the displaced people have been trapped on Mount Sinjar without sufficient food or water.

Jerome Longue discussed the crisis with UNAMI Spokesperson Eliana Nabaa on the line from Erbil in northern Iraq.
