Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, many of them from vulnerable Christian and Yezidi communities, have been displaced by attacks by the rebel fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Officials in Iraq's Kurdistan region have told the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) that tens of thousands of people have crossed into the region to escape fighting in and around the town of Sinjar.

Thousands more are expected to arrive in the coming days. A cooked meal, a roof and safety contribute to saving their lives.

UNHCR's Edith Champagne reports on some of the displaced people sheltering in a school.
