Immediate action is necessary to prevent the possible massacre of the people in the northern Iraqi town of Amerli, the UN Special Envoy for the country urged on Saturday.

Nickolay Mladenov made the appeal following alarming reports regarding the inhuman conditions Amerli's citizens are living in.

The town is surrounded by armed militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) who have cut off the town's food and water supplies.

The situation is desperate and has been ongoing for almost two months, Mr Mladenov noted.

He called on the Iraqi Government to do all it can to relieve the siege and to ensure that the residents receive emergency aid or are evacuated in a dignified manner.

Iraq's allies and the international community should work with the authorities to prevent a human rights tragedy, Mr. Mladenov added.
