WOMEN: Women on Security Council have responsibility to open door for others

Women ambassadors who serve on the United Nations Security Council have the responsibility to open the door for other women to follow in their steps. That's according to Maria Cristina Perceval, the Permanent Representative of Argentina, who is one of five female ambassadors currently serving on the Council. It's the first time there have been five women on the 15-member body. In the second of our series of interviews with women ambassadors, Elizabeth Philip asked Ms Perceval about the significance of serving on the Security Council.

Refugee children facing catastrophic nutrition situation in Africa

Refugee children in Africa are facing what has been described as a "catastrophic nutrition situation" following a cut in food rations. The UN has warned that funding difficulties, compounded by security and logistical problems in some countries, have forced cuts in food rations for nearly 800,000 refugees in nine African countries. It could worsen already unacceptable levels of acute malnutrition, stunting and anaemia, particularly in children. Don Murray reports.

Chemicals commonly found in cosmetics are impacting negatively on women's health, according to an international network of environmental and health organisations. Women in Europe for a Common Future, , recently attended the inaugural meeting of a new body, the United Nations Environment Assembly, which is focusing on moving ecological issues up the political agenda. Its Executive Director, Sasha Gabizon, told the meeting that new policies are needed to regulate what it calls "chemical pollution" in cosmetics but also in work places where harmful chemicals are found. Fan Xiao asked Ms Gabizon why her organisation is campaigning on this issue.
