Having a woman in charge of one of the larger United Nations peacekeeping operations with a significant military component is important, according to South Sudan's UN envoy. Completing her three year term in office, Ms Hilde Johnson says it helps to show that a woman can take on difficult challenges on an equal footing as men. A crisis exploded in December last year following a power struggle between President Salva Kiir and his then deputy, Riek Machar. Opening the gates of the UN compound to give shelter to civilians fleeing for their lives was her greatest achievement during that term, Ms Johnson said. Although there will be "incredible" challenges going forward, she told Elizabeth Philips, she believed she made the right decision.
