The United Nations Special Envoy on the situation of human rights in Cambodia has once again called for an end to the official ban on demonstrations.

Mr Surya Subedi issued the statement in the wake of alarming reports of violence following opposition protests in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.

Forty people were injured in violent clashes between opposition members of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and mostly private security guards.

Five of the six opposition members under arrest are members of parliament.

Mr Subedi is urging the Government to guarantee Cambodians their constitutional right to peaceful assembly with immediate effect by lifting the ban on protests.

He also requested fair treatment for those arrested.
