New and critical information on trends in urbanization and city growth has been released in a report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

The 2014 World Urbanization Prospects report launched one day before World Population Day covers 233 countries and territories.

The paper, issued every two years, provides new and updated data that is important for assessing current and future needs with respect to urban growth.

It will help set policy priorities to promote an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development for urban and rural areas alike.

More than half of the world's population currently resides in cities and the report projects that by 2050 about two-thirds of all humans will live in urban areas.
