All parties to a conflict must respect and protect the right to education, according to the Director-General of the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.

Ms Irina Bokova made the appeal following reports that schools and educational facilities in Gaza and Israel are being damaged as a result of shelling and rocket attacks.

UNRWA, the UN agency dealing with Palestinian refugees in the near East, has had three direct hits from Israeli fire on two schools in Central Gaza in the past three days.

Ms Bokova also called for all sides in the conflict to respect the civilian character of schools and to not violate their premises.

According to UNESCO, conflict is the steepest barrier to education across the globe

Over half of the children out of school today live in countries affected by conflict or fragility, representing 28 million girls and boys.
