The Maasai people in the Ngorongoro District of Tanzania are using radio to air their concerns and reach out to fellow Tanzanians and authorities so that they can better understand their situation.   The Maasai pastoralists are concerned about being pushed out of grazing areas to make way for tourism.   Thanks to the UN cultural agency (UNESCO), a team of four has been at work since last year broadcasting from the Ngorongoro district.   Yannick Ndoinyo, Executive Director of the Tanzania-based IrkiRamat Foundation spoke with Derrick Mbatha about the community radio operation and some of the challenges it is facing.

Over 800 families in Somaliland who were displaced by decades of insecurity are making a fresh start in a newly established community.   Digaale is on the outskirts of Hargeysa, the capital of Somaliland and provides residents with a whole range of services that they have found difficult to access as displaced people.   The move was lead, in part, by the UN humanitarian office, OCHA.   Matthew Conway reports

Humanitarian drones promoted by UNICEF

Drones or unmanned aerial vehicles could become a common sight in humanitarian crises across Africa, if a United States-based scientist has her way.   Pia Zaragoza received funding from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) to build a prototype model which could be built cheaply with a 3D printer and which would enable emergency workers to do their work faster and more efficiently.   Daniel Dickinson asked her to explain how the drone works
