Twenty-two thousand subsistence farmers in rural Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, are reaping the benefits of higher yields by acquiring new skills and techniques, according to the UN's International Fund for Agricultural Development.   IFAD has set up farmer field schools managed by smallholder farmers who share new research and technologies and incorporate them in their farming activities.   IFAD followed a number of these "apprentice" farmers over three years to see the impact that this education has had on their lives.   Joanne Levitan has the story.

Tsetse fly genome breakthrough brings hope for African farmers

Scientists have achieved a major breakthrough in a programme to eradicate the tsetse fly in Africa by deciphering the fly's genetic code.   Tsetse can carry a parasite that can kill both humans and animals.   In Sub-Saharan Africa around three million animals are infected each year.   The genome of the species, glossina morsitans, was sequenced and annotated during a 10-year international effort that involved the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).   Steve Thachet has been speaking to Kostas Bourtzis, a Molecular Biologist from the IAEA/FAO Insect Pest Control Laboratory.
