UN and AFRICA: Africa makes progress on maternity protection rights

Africa has made progress on maternity protection rights over the last two decades but more needs to be done to ensure women receive the benefits they deserve, according to the International Labour Organization.   The ILO is calling is calling for a greater role for the government in providing cash pay-outs when women take time off from work to have children.   Many women leave the labour market because employers are unable or unwilling to pay those benefits.   Daniel Dickinson has been speaking to Laura Addati, a maternity protection specialist at the ILO.

Chocolate lovers in Europe are contributing to the preservation of one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots.   São Tomé, an island off the west coast of Africa is home to many unique species of flora and fauna.   Protected land is increasingly coming under pressure as impoverished people cut down trees for firewood and construction.   But now a project to revitalize the growing of cocoa, the raw material for chocolate, could reverse that trend.   Joanne Levitan reports.

Alcohol the silent killer in South Sudan

There is a lack of awareness among the people of South Sudan regarding the dangers of consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, an assistant professor of Pathology at the University of Juba warned.   The World Health Organization recently published a global status report on alcohol and health 2014 to assist countries in their efforts to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and its health and social consequences.   There were no statistics available for South Sudan in the reports' individual profiles.   Dr. Oromo Francis shared with Nelson Lwak his fears that if uncontrolled, many people could suffer and die silently due to alcoholism.
