The murder of a Member of the Somali Federal Parliament in Mogadishu has been condemned by the UN's top envoy in the country.

Mohamed Mohamud 'Hayd' and a security officer were shot and killed as they travelled in a vehicle in the Somali capital on Thursday morning.

A parliamentary official accompanying them was also injured.

A second MP escaped unharmed.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, expressed his deep concern regarding attacks claimed by Al-Shabaab since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

He said he was appalled to learn of the murder of Mr Mohamud and condemned his "brutal murder in the strongest terms."
