An attack by Islamic militants on the Presidential compound in Mogadishu, known as Villa Somalia, has been condemned by the UN Special Envoy to the country.

It is the latest in a series of assaults by Al Shabaab against Somalia's political institutions.

And it comes after a failed raid against Parliament on 5 July.

Mr Nicolas Kay commended the Somali and African Union security forces for their "prompt action" in successfully dealing with the attack.

Mr Kay said the United Nations would continue to assist the people and institutions of Somalia as they make progress towards stability and peace.
