Young people are not just leaders of tomorrow but also leaders of today, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The Secretary-General spoke on Monday as he welcomed young people from around the world to a two-day forum organized by the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The forum is providing a platform for young people to discuss the development agenda that follow the Millennium Development Goals, the poverty targets the deadline for which is 2015.

Mr. Ban urged young people to do their part in tackling global challenges, including climate change and helping the people who are suffering in places like Syria and South Sudan.

"People commonly say that young people are the leaders of tomorrow. I have a different view. I know that young people are also leaders of today. From technology to politics, from the arts to the sciences, from the streets to the information superhighway, you are already making your mark. Half the globe is under 25 years of age. We need your engagement like never before." (26")

Secretary-General Ban said that young people have passion and are also showing compassion by coming together to build a better world.
