An appeal to end clan-based fighting in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region has been made by the UN's top envoy in the country.

Nicholas Kay, the Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) said that "all parties must refrain from violent actions", and resolve their differences through what he called "peaceful dialogue and compromise."

According to media reports, recent clashes in Lower Shabelle affected hundreds of residents and farmers.

The fighting took place in areas that had been newly liberated from the insurgent group Al-Shabaab.

Mr Kay said that Somalis had already suffered enough and that no good would come from "further violence and insecurity."
