The reconciliation process in Côte d’Ivoire is progressing ahead of presidential elections which are due to be held next year, according to the top UN envoy in the country.   The West African nation is recovering from the political crisis and violence that followed the refusal of former President Laurent Gbagbo to concede defeat in the 2010 presidential election.   Cristina Silveiro asked the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, Aichatou Mindaoudou, about the progress made on reconciling former enemies.

Former adversaries in the Darfur region of Sudan are learning to live together following a United Nations initiative to revive traditional mediation methods.   An estimated 300,000 people have died in Darfur over the last decade as government forces continue to battle with militias.   At the root of the problem is competition over natural resources, water and grazing lands.   But as Pat Duffy reports, former enemies are able to reconcile and work towards a better future.

Youth want to be "more involved" in environmental decisions

The world's young people want to be "more involved" in policy decisions which relate to the environment, according to a youth representative from South Africa.   Governments, decision makers, scientists, civil society representatives and business leaders gathered in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss how best to tackle global environmental challenges.   They met at the inaugural meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), a new world body that places environmental issues at the heart of international affairs.   Fan Xiao asked South Africa-based Ashly Van Heerden from Tunza a youth project of the UN Environment Programme how young people have contributed to the inaugural meeting.
