It's "time to act" to end gender violence in conflict through gender equality.  That's the message delivered by the United Kingdom Permanent Mission to the UN at a special event in New York on Tuesday.   The hashtag is being used as a social media campaign to encourage people get involved in the fight. Many are "tweeting" and forming virtual communities to discuss the issue, the Deputy Permanent Representative Peter Wilson said.

Investment in midwifery could save millions of lives

Millions of lives could be saved if more investment was made in midwives around the world according to a report launched by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).   The State of the World's Midwifery 2014 report reveals that despite a steady drop in maternal and newborn deaths since 1990, hundreds of thousands of women and newborns continue to die each year during pregnancy and childbirth.   In 2013 alone 289,000 women and 2.9 million newborn babies died. Australian female peacekeeper inspired by father

A female peacekeeper from Australia and now based in South Sudan has said she was inspired to become a soldier by her father who was in the Australian army.   Lt. Sara Mooney is one of the few female peacekeepers in the newest African country working for the UN mission (UNMISS).   She told Regina Gorle she is motivated to make a positive contribution every day and to create a safer and more secure South Sudan.
