UN CALLING ASIA: Small Island Developing States take lead on environmental protection

The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are not just "victims" of global climate change" but are taking progressive steps to attenuate its impact. That's according to Nik Sekhran, Director of the UN Development Programme's Environment and Energy Group. The Maldives, for example, has banned shark fishing in their waters and has also created a biosphere reserve to preserve and protect their environment. Mr Sekhran has been speaking to Jocelyne Sambira.

At least 1,075 people have been killed and close to 1,200 have been injured in Iraq since early June. The human rights team of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, says there are reports of summary executions, extra-judicial killings and adbuctions. Videos have shown victims being beheaded. The country has been plunged into a crisis after armed militants took control of major towns and cities. The United Nations estimates that there are one million displaced people in the country. Nicki Chadwick reports.

Youth leader campaigns for recognition by world leaders on environmental issues

A youth leader from India is calling on world governments to take more notice of the views of young people when they formulate environmental policies. Yugrama Srivastava is a representative of Tunza, a youth project of the UN Environment Programme. She's been attending the inaugural meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), in Nairobi, Kenya. The Assembly is a new world body that places environmental issues at the heart of international affairs.  Ms Srivastava has been involved in a number of international lobbying efforts including the Copenhagen climate change conference. Fan Xiao asked her for more details.
