Investment in midwives could save millions of lives

Millions of lives could be saved if more investment was made in midwives around the world according to a report launched by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

The State of the World's Midwifery 2014 report reveals that despite a steady drop in maternal and newborn deaths since 1990, hundreds of thousands of women and newborns continue to die each year during pregnancy and childbirth.

In 2013 alone 289,000 women and 2.9 million newborn babies died.
