Gender equality one of "most pressing" development challenges facing India

Ensuring gender equality is one of the "most pressing" development challenges facing India, according to the United Nations' most senior representative in the country.

India currently ranks 136 out of 186 countries in the UN's Gender Inequality Index.

Low political representation, high unemployment and deep-rooted prejudice against women are all issues which need tackling according to Lise Grande, the UN Resident Coordinator in the country.

Daniel Dickinson began by asking her what it is like to be a woman in India in 2014.
