Redefining masculinity and promoting gender equality are key components in the fight to end sexual violence.

That's according to the Deputy Permanent Representative for the United Kingdom to the United Nations.

Peter Wilson was speaking at a special event in New York entitled "Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict through Gender Equality".

He said the aim of the event was to give a platform to people from different backgrounds to express themselves.

"And the reason why we wanted to do this is we wanted to give people a chance to bear witness themselves to what they see as a positive image of masculinity and how together we can fight sexual violence. That is giving a platform to people to express themselves in preparation for a big event that we are doing in London organized by our Foreign Secretary on prevention of sexual violence. We are having a huge conference, I think the biggest we ever had in London from the 10th to the 12th of June and the aim of that is to get all the different actors who can actually make this history into the room together so that we can end this scourge."

During the special event, people were invited to enter a booth to record a video message on ending sexual violence through gender equality.

The UK mission to the UN has also adopted a hashtag "Timetoact" on social media to draw attention to the upcoming Global Summit in London.
