Female Genital Mutilation or FGM is a violation of a person's rights, a form of "control over women" and a procedure which causes "irreversible and life-long" physical damage.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, came out strong in her condemnation of the practice on Monday during a high-level panel in Geneva.

According to the UN Children's Fund, in 29 countries with the highest prevalence rate, more than 125 million girls and women have been subjected to the practice.
