The European Union has reaffirmed its support for the UN agency helping Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Two senior EU officials in Brussels on Wednesday signed a joint declaration on EU support for UNRWA with the agency's Commissioner General.

Under the agreement, the EU will provide $335 million up to 2016.

The EU contribution to the UNRWA General Fund will allow the agency to provide essential education, health, relief and social services to Palestinian refugees.

UNRWA, which is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions from Member States, started its operations in 1950 following the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict.
