Education can help fight poverty and educating girls, in particular, can contribute to sustainable development, according to the former Prime Minister of Australia.

Ms Julia Gillard, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), was speaking at a high profile conference on the future of global education in the world's poorest countries.

GPE held its second Replenishment Pledging Conference in Brussels, the capital of Belgium on 25 and 26 June.

World leaders are being urged to support a fund that would allow children in the poorest countries to attend primary school over the next four years.

Ms Gillard, a lifelong advocate for educational equality and equity, spoke to UNICEF's Mia Lobel.
