Women are now better off than they were 20 years ago, according to the head of UN Women. The United Nations agency is marking the 20th anniversary of the historic Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, a landmark meeting that promoted gender equality. A major publicity campaign is aiming to mobilize governments and citizens alike to picture a world where gender equality is a reality. May Yaacoub asked Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women, about the campaign.

South Sudanese women pray for peace

More than 30 women's groups in South Sudan are planning to come together for a prayer for Peace day in the lead up to the next round of talks in Addis Ababa. The talks are aimed at ending the conflict that broke out in December between government forces and those loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar who was sacked by President Salvar Kiir in July last year. The Eve organization for Women's Development is organizing the event that will see 34 organizations joining in prayer. The group believes this country needs to unite in prayer to be able to unite in peace. Sri Lankan women migrants in need of protection against abuse says UN expert

Sri Lankan women who migrate abroad for work should be better protected against abuse and exploitation, according to a UN expert. Around 1.8 million Sri Lankans are migrant workers in foreign countries. The majority of women migrants are employed as domestic workers in the Middle East where they often face exploitative work conditions. Daniel Dickinson has been talking to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau who has just returned from a visit to Sri Lanka.
