UN calls for "immediate moratorium" on US death penalty

Human Rights Council

An "immediate moratorium" on the use of the death penalty in the United States has been called for by the UN after a bungled execution of a man in the state of Oklahoma.

Clayton Lockett was taken to the execution chamber on Tuesday but the lethal drugs that were injected into a vein did not work.

He died of a heart attack 10 minutes after his execution was stopped.
