A plea not to fail young generations of the world has been made by the UN Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth.

Speaking at the World Conference on Youth in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday, Ahmad Alhendawi said young people are facing many challenges.

He pointed out that 40 per cent of the unemployed globally are youth, and nearly 70 million adolescents are out of school.

Mr Alhendawi also stressed that if current trends continue in the next decade, over 140 million girls will be married before their 18th birthday.

He said people need to be empowered to reach their true potential, in order to sustain the planet so that future generations will have the opportunity to do the same.

The conference, from 6th to 10th May, is the first meeting of its kind ever organized in Asia with close to 1,000 young participants from around the world.
