UN CALLING ASIA: "Being female, not a hindrance" says UN peacekeeper in Haiti

A UN peacekeeper in Haiti says it is not a hindrance being a woman and having to lead fitness training for officers. Sergeant Ermita Matutina, who is from the Philippines, is based in Haiti with the UN peacekeeping mission, MINUSTAH. She's in charge of daily fitness training for men and women. She served in Haiti before the 2010 earthquake and made a point of going back in order to make a difference. On International Day of UN Peacekeepers Monica Grayley asked Sergeant Matutina about her role in the mission.

"Social and emotional learning" piloted for China's most vulnerable children

Schools in rural China are piloting a new teaching method which is changing the way students and educators interact.The approach is being called social and emotional learning and is being supported by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). Daniel Dickinson has more details.

Increased protection against the abuse and exploitation of Sri Lankans who migrate abroad for work is needed according to a UN expert.Around 10 per cent of Sri Lanka's population of 20 million is working in foreign countries, largely as domestic workers. Many are forced to accept poor pay and sometimes exploitative work conditions.The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau has just returned from a visit to Sri Lanka. Daniel Dickinson asked him what conditions migrant workers face.
