World Autism Awareness Day

Buildings and landmark structures around the world are lit blue on Wednesday to mark World Autism Awareness Day.

The day is observed on 2 April each year to put the spotlight on this condition which is caused by neurological disorder affecting the functioning of the brain.

Although no accurate data is available, it is estimated that over 60 million people worldwide are affected by autistic spectrum disorder.

The World Health Organization describes autism as a condition that manifests itself in the early years of life.

People with autism have difficulties with social and communication skills and need close supervision and care.
