UN AND AFRICA: UN mission in Sierra Leone ends

• The United Nations mission in Sierra Leone completed its work on 31 March. The UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone, (UNIPSIL) has been helping the country in its post conflict recovery.UNIPSIL followed the world's largest peacekeeping mission of over 17,000 "blue helmets" to disarm rebel militias and restore stability.

Violence between Christians and Muslims in CAR intensifying

• Violence in the Central African Republic is intensifying, according to the United Nations. Thousands of people are believed to have been killed, and 2.2 million need humanitarian aid as a result of the ongoing conflict between Christian and Muslims. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says the renewed violence has displaced more people within the country and across the border.

Men's network promotes gender equality in Mozambique

• It is increasingly being recognized that for societies to make progress women need to be treated as equal partners with men. What is also increasingly being stressed is the role that men have to play in promoting gender equality. In Mozambique, there is a network of organizations called the Men for Change Network which is addressing issues of masculinity, gender equality, health and human rights.
