Sport can act as a "clarion call to international understanding" and can promote peace.

That's according to the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jan Eliasson.

Speaking ahead of a debate on Monday at the UN on the role of sport in promoting peace and development, he said sport engenders fundamental principles.

"Sports relate to peace and security, sports relate to development and sports relate to human rights. We are all equal, so sports should be a clarion call to international understanding."

The debate is one of a number of events marking the inaugural annual International Day of Sport for Development and Peace first celebrated on 6th April this year.
