Political commitment needed to create equitable cities

Political commitment and technical expertise are needed to create cities in which people can live as equal citizens, according to the UN's human settlements chief.

Speaking at the World Urban Forum which ends on Friday in the Colombian city of Medellin, Joan Clos, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, said that urban planning should be democratic and involve all parts of the community.

He told delegates at the forum that the utopian idea of a city for all people was still possible.

Joshua Mmali asked Mr Clos what needs to happen to realise that goal.
