The besieged Syrian city of Homs is once again the theatre of death and destruction, a situation which has been described by the Joint Special Representative for Syria as "alarming".

Lakhdar Brahimi on Thursday said he deeply regretted that discussions between the Syrian authorities and a Negotiating Committee representing civilians and fighters had been brutally stopped.

He said the deal was on the verge of being signed.

Mr Brahimi reiterated that the talks had been followed with keen interest and great hope by people all over Syria, as well as elsewhere in the world.

He also noted that the Government's media in Damascus had written very positively about the process.

The Special Representative said to have reached out to all those who could help put an end to this tragedy, while urging all parties to return to the negotiating table.
