The important role of partnerships of various sectors of society to promote sustainable development was stressed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.

Ambassador John Ashe spoke at the first ever joint thematic debate of the UN General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on the role of partnerships for the implementation of the post 2015 development agenda.

He called for innovative partnerships to mobilize public and private as well as local, regional and international resources to fight poverty around the world.

"The UN is in a unique position to forge these innovative partnerships, bringing together stakeholders from all around the world and all corners of society: government, private sector, civil society and the academic and scientific communities and in using its agencies at the national and regional levels to support the development policy and programmatic efforts of governments" (28")

Diplomats, United Nations officials as well as representatives of the private sector and civil society are attending the two-day meeting in New York.

They are sharing ideas on the sustainable development goals that will follow the Millennium Development Goals after 2015.
